Open Top Shipping Containers

Open top containers have very similar characteristics and dimensions to standard, enclosed dry cargo shipping containers.

They are generally constructed or manufactured from corrugated steel with double doors at one end.  Timber or plywood flooring is usually standard.

The difference is that there is no hard roof.  Instead the roof is comprised of removable bows and a heavy duty canvas or tarpaulin.

 

The roof bows not only support the tarpaulin but are designed to add to the overall stability of the container.

Open-top containers, therefore, are very well suited to overheight freight or what might be described as ‘tall’ cargo.

Top Side Loading

Open top containers easily facilitate overhead access for ease of loading (packing) or unloading (unpacking) by crane or other machinery with mechanical jib or arm.

Most open top containers have a rotating steel support (or door header) above the door aperture that when rotated permits open, aerial access through and above the door space.

Fork lift pockets can be found beneath the floor section on the outside of the container.

 

Canvas & Tarpaulin Roof Coverings

Shipping container companies usually provide either a heavy duty canvas or tarpaulin with intermodal containers for sale or for hire.

Tarpaulins are designed to be movable in either one or both directions and are fastened using lashing bars and rings that the tarpaulin is affixed to.

Fixing Tarpaulins With Lashing Rings & Bars

Fixing and securing the tarpaulin from the elements requires lashing bars and/or rings.

Lashing bars are available on the outside walls of the container.

When using 1-way tarpaulins, it is important that corner castings are available and accessible.

Lashing rings are also found on the lower longitudinal section of open top containers.

They have a maximum permissible load of around 1000 kg ( 220 lbs) each.
